Visva-Bharati has positioned under suspension a teacher who heads an instructors’ body and who has actually been a critic of Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty.

Sudipta Bhattacharyya, a teacher of Economics, who has been giving voice to faculty members who felt aggrieved, was put under suspension on Thursday for alleging abnormalities in the appointment of the principal of Patha Bhavana, one of the organizations of Visva Bharati.

” … the Executive Council in its conference hung on January 7 observed that Prof. Sudipta Bhattacharyya prima facie devoted misbehavior by mass distributing a complaint and derogatory/defamatory/baseless remarks against a fellow worker and likewise forwarding copies of the exact same to high dignitaries by e-mail,” the suspension order stated.

The action versus him is hardly surprising; in reality it was just anticipated, considering that Teacher Bhattacharyya, who heads the Visva-Bharati University Professors Association (VBUFA) proved to be a pinprick for the VC ever considering that the latter took charge in November 2018.

It was because of the VBUFA that a number of decisions taken by the authorities that did not decrease well with professor got highlighted in the media, following which an order was provided prohibiting any staff member besides the PRO from talking to reporters.

    Amartya Sen problem

What irritated the VC the most, according to sources, was the current debate regarding Nobel laureate Amartya Sen Last month, throughout a virtual meeting with professor, the VC made a claim that he had gotten a call from Teacher Sen, who presented himself as “Bharat Ratna Amartya Sen” and asked for that hawkers outside his Santiniketan house not be forced out. Consequently, the VBUFA president emailed Teacher Sen, who rejected making any such call.

When the university repeated that the Nobel laureate had undoubtedly called the VC and even identified the time the call was made– in June 2019– Teacher Bhattacharyya as soon as again composed to the Nobel laureate, who rubbished the claim as “tantalisingly incorrect”.

Following this undesirable publicity, it was anticipated that disciplinary action would be taken versus Teacher Bhattacharyya earlier than later. He is now said to be preparing to challenge his suspension in the Calcutta High Court.
