Validated: The PS5 is the biggest game console in modern-day history

When internet investigators revealed the PlayStation 5 was going to be huge, we were incredibly entertained– but even their elegant Photoshops could not totally prepare us for how massive the PS5 really is.

Approximately half an hour after Sony lastly revealed the next-gen console’s price and release date($399 or $499, November 12 th) the company launched a complete specification sheet that includes the console’s dimensions. And it’s a beast.

Quick, what’s the most significant console ever made? Did you state the initial 2001 Xbox, or the VCR-sized initial Xbox One? Maybe the 60 GB PS3, affectionately dubbed the “Phat”?

Wrong. The PS5 is bigger than all of them.

According to Sony, the PS5 is roughly 390 mm (154 inches) high, 260 mm (1024 inches) deep and 104 mm (4.09 inches) large, making it the single most significant game console you have actually most likely ever become aware of. The model without the disc drive? Very same story, just 12 millimeters slimmer.

I plugged the numbers into to see how it stacks up to consoles that we have actually formerly ridiculed for being absolute chonks:

From delegated right: PS3 60 GB, Xbox, Xbox One, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5
Visualization: CompareSizes

There’s hardly a contrast. The PS5 is a lot larger, you can’t even argue the 3D viewpoint shakes off its actual size. I’m pretty sure you ‘d require to return to the days of game devices with built-in CRT televisions, or computer systems like the Commodore 64, to get much bigger.

And young boy oh young boy is this box larger than the brand-new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S:

Notice that the 3D tool doesn’t line up the backs of each console. The PS5 is a lot deeper than either Xbox.

I don’t even require to tell you which console is which. It’s clearly obvious. Keep in mind when we were worried whether the new Xbox would suit our entertainment centers?

Oh, and there’s one little bit I forgot to point out, which makes this even much better: Sony isn’t consisting of the PS5’s “largest projection” or optional base in those measurements, according to its press release.

See those yellow and blue boxes? Now picture some fins standing out the top of them.

Here’s a 3D visualization of all 7 consoles whose dimensions I plugged in, if you want to spin them around yourself. And in case you’re wondering, the PS5 will also weigh 4.5 kg, or about 10 pounds. Dropping the disc drive brings you down to 3.9 kg or 8.6 pounds.

Mind you, I enjoyed my 60 GB PS3 in spite of its girth, and I doubt I’ll feel in a different way about the PS5. The remainder of the spec sheet is pretty outstanding, too!

I’ll leave it below so you can browse.
