    Twitter’s Birdwatch feature wants to fight misinformation. Here’s how it works and how to sign up for it

    Twitter has presented a series of features intended to slow the spread of misinformation and disinformation on the platform.

    In January 2021, the social networks company launched its pilot Birdwatch feature, which lets users flag and fact-check tweets they think include unreliable or misleading information, along with include notes to tweets that require additional context.

    The feature is just readily available to a choose number of users within the United States, however Twitter said it wants to enable more people to get involved soon.

    Quick note: Birdwatch is a separate website from Twitter, and notes made by Birdwatch participants on tweets can just be seen on the Birdwatch website, not on Twitter.

    How Twitter’s Birdwatch function works

    Users who have been selected for the pilot program of Birdwatch have the ability to make comments on specific tweets they consider to be misinformation or to require more context, in addition to rate comments made by other users.

    1. On the Birdwatch website, a Birdwatch participant recognizes a tweet that has obsoleted info and needs extra context.
    2. The user will choose the three horizontal dots in the tweet’s upper-right corner to access the menu.

    3. The next page will prompt the user to agree to Birdwatch’s terms and conditions.

    4. A series of questions will appear about what makes the tweet misleading. Once all concerns are addressed, a note can be added. Notes can also include links to trustworthy sources.
    5. Select “Submit” to end up.

    Birdwatch remarks are public and will display your Twitter username when you send one. Nevertheless, notes can be erased at any time.

    If you ‘d like to view Birdwatch comments on tweets, go to the Birdwatch website, choose “See all notes on this Tweet” under a tweet.

    If you’re a Birdwatch individual, you can also rate talk about tweets for accuracy and helpfulness. Tweets with notes will display a Birdwatch icon beside them.

    When Birdwatch will be offered for all users

    Birdwatch is in pilot mode, suggesting Twitter is experimenting with the function’s effectiveness prior to it rolls out globally. Users who desire to get involved can sign up here

    To be eligible for Birdwatch, users have to have: a verified phone and e-mail address; a U.S.-based phone provider; enabled two-factor authentication; no recent account offenses; and an acknowledgment of Twitter’s terms of service.
