Twitter will transfer governmental accounts to Joe Biden on Inauguration Day
Twitter will move the @POTUS account to President-elect Joe Biden when he’s sworn in on Inauguration Day, the company told Politico Twitter will transfer the account to Biden even if President Donald Trump hasn’t yielded– which he still hasn’t done, in spite of the election widely being required Biden previously this month.
” Twitter is actively preparing to support the shift of White House institutional Twitter accounts on January 20 th, 2021,” a Twitter spokesperson said in a declaration to The Edge “As we did for the governmental shift in 2017, this process is being done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records Administration.”
Other presidential accounts, consisting of @whitehouse, @VP, and @FLOTUS, will be moved over also, Politico reports. The existing content on all of the accounts will be archived before the transfer (here’s Barack Obama’s @POTUS archive, if you wonder), and the accounts will be reset to reveal no tweets.
Trump will continue to control his individual account, @realDonaldTrump, after Biden’s inauguration, however the account will lose the special protections it gets due to Trump’s status as a world leader– suggesting he will be subject to the same rules as the bulk of the users on the platform.
Correction: We originally stated in one sentence that Twitter hadn’t responded to an ask for remark, but they had. We are sorry for the mistake.
