    The idea of opening a separate bench of the leading court outside Delhi has not discovered favour with the Supreme Court of India, the federal government notified Parliament on Wednesday.

    In a written reply to a concern in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad said representations were received from time to time from different quarters for establishment of Supreme Court benches in various parts of the nation.

    ” The Law Commission, in its 229 th Report, had actually also suggested that a Constitution Bench be established at Delhi and four cassation benches be established in the northern area at Delhi, the southern region at Chennai/Hyderabad, the eastern area at Kolkata and the western area at Mumbai.

    ” The concept of a separate Bench of Supreme Court outside Delhi has actually not found favour with the Supreme Court of India,” he said.

    The minister was asked whether the government had actually gotten any proposition from lawyers’ associations to open a Supreme Court bench in Chennai for the convenience of individuals of the southern states and to reduce money and time on lawsuits.
