“Our electoral and political outcomes will not enhance until individuals start thinking in us,” states Chowdhury.
Months after the exit of Jyotiraditya Scindia and in the middle of a full-blown disobedience by Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan, there is a fresh churning in the Congress. CWC member and Leader of the celebration in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, talks to The Sunday Express about the state of affairs in the party and the way forward. Excerpts from the interview:
What is occurring in the Congress? You must have learnt about the debate at the conference of Rajya Sabha MPs convened by Sonia Gandhi on Thursday?
In politics, truth needs to be accepted. Our party requires energy, which is lacking now. If we can’t energise our employees, digital (projects) and press rundowns will not give wanted outcomes. We raise every issue– we leave no stone unturned to raise issues; and it is a reality that no one else reviews (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi the way we do. We have to move from digital (campaign) to practical, which indicates we should create energy in the grassroots employee.
It is a truth that we have actually not been successful in energising our grassroots worker. Political workers should have ideological and political fodder.
Mani Shankar Aiyar writes| Congress requires a hands-on leader who delights in the confidence of the celebration
Why is that happening?
Because there are weaknesses in our organisational structure. Our organisational facilities must be well-oiled and well-structured. Our grassroots workers are not having the ability to disseminate (amongst individuals). So we are lagging in getting people’s confidence and bringing them to our side.
Our electoral and political outcomes will not improve up until individuals start believing in us.
What is the factor for this organisational weakness?
There had been a decay. We were in power for long– for 10 years (of UPA)– so we have ended up being weak in establishing grassroots leadership. Regional celebrations have actually also emerged (recently), and at lots of places our people signed up with regional celebrations. So there is a huge space. There is a need for grassroots and local leaders with potential. There is no weak point at the top.
So is the Congress now restricted to social networks and interview halls?
Most of the work we are doing is through social media– Twitter and digital platforms. I utilized to suggest throughout my interactions (that) we have to initially hit the street. Without being on the street we can not expect the wanted result.
What about rivalry in between old and young leaders in the celebration?
That is propaganda. The Congress is a melting pot of numerous concepts. When we are accommodating pluralistic ideas can we not accommodate people of different age group? This is fake (the old vs young argument). The experience of the older generation and the energy of the young have to be integrated– it should not be experience versus energy.
Some enthusiastic young leaders possibly believe the Congress might not return to power quickly. My suggestions to them is, it is going to be a long fight against the BJP
But we see friction sometimes.
That is a little bit of an exaggeration. This kind of bogey could have been raised by some sector of our celebration however it is exaggeration. My argument is that experience and energy need to be combined together. Which party does not have leaders from old and young generations? In Indian society, we respect the older generation, and the young have the responsibility to take care of them. That is our society’s dharma; and parties are not outside the society.
Political psychology is not separated from social psychology. There is a requirement for white hair, grey hair and black hair.
How do you react to the exit of Jyotiraditya Scindia and the rebellion by Sachin Pilot?
Their attitude is to grab whatever rapidly. The party made Scindia and Pilot leaders; they are not magicians.
And what was the identity of Madhavrao Scindia and Rajesh Pilot? Their identity was that of Congress leaders.
So they (Sachin and Jyotiraditya) have acquired (traditions); they are scions.
Have they (Sachin and Jyotiraditya) ever fought on the ground? When Congress workers were combating to construct the celebration, were getting whipped by authorities, these individuals were studying in Oxford and Stanford.
They wish to climb up fast. They want to climb up a 10- storey structure taking a lift, and not take the stairs. This is the distinction.
Is their exit connected to the management unpredictability at the top?
Sachin was in Rajasthan and Scindia in Madhya Pradesh. Who stopped Sachin from revealing his might in the Lok Sabha elections? One (Scindia) combated and lost to his former PS. If you are such a strong and capable leader how did you lose to your PS? Sachin collected the anti-incumbency state of mind (for Assembly polls). Had actually there been no anti-incumbency you would not have pertained to power in Rajasthan, due to the fact that when the Lok Sabha elections occurred a year later on you did not get any seat.
What could you provide to the Congress?
You stated the celebration’s message is not reaching the ground. Is this due to the confusion at the top?
That the Congress does not have a leader, does not have a president … these our internal problems. Some vested interests and some media individuals are more concerned about it than all of us (in the celebration).
What we must do is to develop skilled district and regional leaders. The person who has actually been made the (state system) president (D K Shivakumar) is strong (leader) and has the potential.
