    Obama states John Lewis is ‘smiling down’ on Georgia as he praises Warnock for his Senate win

    Previous President Barack Obama memorialized late US Agent John Lewis in a statement congratulating Reverend Raphael Warnock on his Georgia Unique Senate Runoff Election win against Republican incumbent Sen. Kelly Loeffler on Tuesday night.

    ” My good friend John Lewis is definitely smiling down on his precious Georgia today, as individuals across the state continued the baton that he and so numerous others gave to them,” Obama wrote in a declaration published on his social media “I wish to congratulate Reverend Raphael Warnock on his election as Georgia’s next United States Senator– and while we’re still waiting on outcomes in the other runoff, it’s clear that last night’s proving, together with President-Elect Biden’s November victory in Georgia, is a testament to the power of the steadfast and frequently unheralded work of grassroots arranging and the resilient, visionary leadership of Stacey Abrams.”

    Lewis, who died in July, was a civil liberties icon who served in the Home of Representatives from Georgia for more than three decades.

    Months before his death, Lewis backed Warnock, saying he was a “champion for several years in the battle for ballot rights, financial justice, and access to health care for households all throughout our state.”

    Obama, too, endorsed Warnock and Jon Ossoff, who likewise won his Georgia Unique Senate Overflow Election race, against incumbent Sen. David Perdue.

    In the days prior to Tuesday’s election, Obama had urged people to elect Ossoff and Warnock

    In his declaration on Wednesday, Obama stated Democrats around the nation “need to feel good today,” and advised individuals to “remain engaged in civic life.”
