    NGT Directs States, UTs to Designate Nodal Firm for Security of Water Bodies

    Noting that adequate actions for defense of water bodies have not been taken, the National Green Tribunal has actually directed all states and Union Territories (UTs) to designate a nodal agency for the workout. The NGT directed that under the oversight of primary secretaries of States/UTs, the designated nodal company may hold its conference not behind January 31, 2021, to take stock of the situation and strategy more steps, including instructions to district authorities for further course of action.

    The tribunal asked the Central Monitoring Committee, formed for keeping track of remediation of 351 contaminated river stretches, to monitor the steps for restoration of water bodies by all the states occasionally, at leastthrice in a year. First such tracking may take location by March 31, 2021, the tribunal stated. “We find that steps taken up until now can hardly be held to be adequate … It helps not just looks but also water schedule, water life, microclimate, recharge of ground water and preserving e-flow of the rivers. “Under the general public Trust Teaching, the State needs to act as trustee of the water bodies to safeguard them for the public use and enjoyment for current and future generations,” a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice A K Goel stated.

    The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by petitioner Haryana resident Lt Col (retd) Sarvadaman Singh Oberoi looking for to bring back Ghata Lake in Gurgaon besides repair of 214 other water bodies and natural channels in the district and comparable water bodies in Faridabad. The tribunal had actually expanded the scope of the petition to the whole country, in the interest of protection of the environment.
