‘Love Jihad’ a BJP Production, Marital Relationship Matter of Personal Liberty, Says CM Gehlot as 4 States Mull Law

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday tore into the ‘love jihad’ controversy and implicated the BJP of “producing” the phrase to divide the nation along common lines. He stated marriages, consisting of inter-faith unions, refer personal liberty and any law to curb them would not stand in court.

Gehlot’s remarks come amidst plans in 4 BJP-ruled states– Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka– to disallow what the particular federal governments and the BJP call ‘love jihad’.

” Love Jihad is a word produced by BJP to divide the Nation & disrupt common consistency. Marital relationship is a matter of individual liberty, bringing a law to suppress it is entirely unconstitutional & it will not stand in any court of law. Jihad has no location in Love (sic),” Gehlot said on Twitter.

They are producing an environment in the nation where consenting adults would be at the grace of state power. Marital relationship is a personal decision & they are putting curbs on it, which is like nabbing away individual liberty.2/

It appears a ploy to interfere with common harmony, fuel social conflict & neglect constitutional provisions like the state not victimizing people on any ground.3/

Countering at Gehlot, Union minister and BJP leader Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated ‘love jihad’ in a “trap”. “Dear Ashok ji, Love Jihad is a trap that has countless young ladies thinking the marital relationship is a personal affair, where later on it ends up it isn’t. Also, if it is a matter of personal liberty, then why are the ladies not free to keep their first name or religious beliefs?” he tweeted.

” Considering that congress desires to support this act of deceit under the garb of personal liberty, isn’t it becomes a blatant display of its common agenda,” Shekhawat added.

In Uttar Pradesh, the house department has actually sent out a proposal to the Department of Law for a ‘love jihad’ legislation. The law department will work out the legal methods after which the federal government is likely to issue an ordinance.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said in a by-election meeting in Jaunpur in October that his government was preparing a stringent law versus so-called ‘love jihad’.

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh has also said the state would quickly have a law against ‘love jihad’. Chouhan’s House Minister Narottam Mishra has actually stated non-bailable charges would be applicable in cases of ‘love jihad’ in Madhya Pradesh.

” We are making preparations to present Madhya Pradesh Civil liberty Expense, 2020 in Assembly. It will attend to 5 years of strenuous jail time. We are also proposing that such criminal offenses be declared a cognizable and non-bailable offence,” Narottam Mishra had actually stated.

In Haryana, home minister Anil Vij had announced that a committee will be setup to prepare a “strict” law against “love jihad”. The house minister, according to the declaration, said that “with the enactment of this law, stringent action will be taken versus anyone who is discovered delighting in spiritual conversion by pressing, tempting someone or is associated with any sort of conspiracy or tries to do so in the name of love”.

Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa, too, stated his federal government is currently in talks with professionals to frame a law that will prohibit religious conversions for marital relationships.
