Around 50 shanties in New Town location near Kolkata and Purba Bardhaman district were gutted in 2 occurrences of fire on the day of Kali puja and Diwali on Saturday, authorities said. 3 individuals were injured in the blaze at a town in Purba Bardhaman while no casualty was reported in the fire that broke out at Gauranga Nagar locality in New Town.
Two fire tenders splashed the blaze in Gauranga Nagar within 30 minutes after it was reported at around 6.30 pm however around 30 shanties were burnt by that time, a fire authorities stated. Asked whether it was triggered by fireworks, he stated, “The factor of the fire is yet to be ascertained.” The Calcutta High Court had last week banned the usage and sale of firecrackers in West Bengal throughout Kali Puja, Diwali, Chhath and other pujas throughout this joyful season to curb pollution amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
